| New Grant Opportunities from the Gates Foundation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now accepting applications through the Grand Challenges and Grand Challenges Explorations initiatives for the following three requests for proposals. Their goal is to harness innovation around emerging technologies for transformative solutions to key global health and agricultural development problems, and they seek to anchor the work with the investigators and implementors closest to the problems, who have the knowledge and perspective to direct the right approaches to the right parts of the problems to help ensure success. Grant applications are still being accepted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for Balance the Equation: A Grand Challenge for Algebra 1, a new Grand Challenges program seeking ideas to radically transform and rethink the traditional math classroom to better support students who have been historically marginalized in math. The application deadline is November 6, 2020. Grant and Other Opportunities from our Partners Grand Challenges for Human Flourishing, a new program of the Templeton World Charity Foundation, has launched a request for proposals to identify opportunities for human flourishing and ways to address them through rigorous research. The application deadline is November 11, 2020 Keystone Symposia Global Health Series has an upcoming conference. Free registration is available for individuals from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) working in science and medicine related fields, and this is open to all career stages:

The African state continues to attract academic interest of significant diversity. To some, the political happenings are not only unique but intriguing, others, the economic structure remains fragile, while to others, and the cultural fluidity remains a critical lens in understanding Africa.
The post-independence period was to usher high expectations among African people whose alienation in the colonial political economy was to be put to rest. Political liberalization was to advance the material conditions of the people.
The African state has evolved through colonial conquest and monopolization. This was characterized by discrimination, alienation and humiliation of the indigenous. Independence then was expected to bring to an end the abject poverty, backwardness and deprivation.
The jury is out and academic discourse is intense on the performance of the African state. Therefore, the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, University of Nairobi invites you to a lecture by Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Department of Political Science, University of Florida, USA. In addition, this lecture brings new insights to the debate with renowned academicians, namely: Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, Governor of Kisumu County and Prof. Peter Wanyande, Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Nairobi.
