Background

The Office of Career Services is a critical department in the University that helps graduates to transit smoothly from learning to earning. This is achieved by developing essential competencies among graduates to groom them for the job market

The University of Nairobi is committed to producing holistic graduates who are prepared for the job market and entrepreneurial activities. It is estimated that of all the graduates who graduate from the Universities, less than 10 per cent are absorbed in the job market. It is against this background that the Ministry of Education through the State Department of Post Training and Skills Development launched the Office of Career Services (OCS) in 2018.

The goal is to increase graduates’ absorption in the job market by developing the “Future Ready Graduates”

Our Mandate

The mandate of the Office of Career Services is twofold; linking graduates to the job market and enhancing the value of graduates through skills and competencies development. This is achieved through continuous recruitment of Career Partners, Career Advisors and Student Career Ambassadors who offer support in linking graduates to the job market and assist students to acquire the relevant skills and competencies for the job market

• Alumni engagement, networking and outreach 

UoN Skills Centre

The UoN Skills Centre trains students on skills needed in the job market such as the 21st century skills that help students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, team players and communicators. Some of the skills development trainings offered include:

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is pleased to inform you that the University of Nairobi has been selected, among a few African universities, to participate in a Youth Employment and Skills Development Pilot Project. In collaboration with LinkedIn Learning, the project plans to provide free employment-relevant online training to randomly selected students. The training is intended to help new university graduates’ success in the job market locally and internationally.

LinkedIn Learning is a leading online learning platform that provides access to thousands of courses developed by renowned experts. Several courses are covered under the pilot project, including data analysis (data analytics), digital marketing, financial analysis and budgeting, Information technology skills etc… which are in high demand by industries in Kenya and internationally. LinkedIn Learning is one of the most competitive tools to develop strong career skills and stay ahead of the competition. It is so flexible to learn and with the LinkedIn Learning app, you can view courses from your mobile device.

Project Details

• Training duration: The training is expected to last for six months.
• Certificate: Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a certificate of completion.
• Eligibility and selection: Only final year undergraduate students who are on a path to graduation by December 2020 are eligible. Training spots will be allocated for randomly selected students based on lottery draws. 
• Registration deadline: 14 August 2020.

The AfDB plans to make such training widely available to students in other universities across Africa. To this end, we would like to study the impacts of the training program on employment and career outcomes. Hence, we request eligible students to voluntarily sign up for a survey.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the delay of schools re-opening until January 2021. Initially, the schools were scheduled to reopen in September 2020.

Prof. Magoha, the Cabinet Secretary for Education in a press conference at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on Tuesday July 28 stated that due to the disturbing trend of the Covid-19 cases, education stakeholders met and agreed that schools be re-opened in January 2021.

The 2020 examination calendar has also been cancelled meaning that learners will have to repeat another year in the respective grades they are in currently.

 “The stakeholders have resolved to reopen all basic education learning institutions in January 2021. This is based on the assumption that the infection curve will have flattened by December, 2020″.  Said CS Magoha.

There will be no KCPE and KCSE examinations in 2020 meaning the 2020 Standard Eight and Form Four candidates will sit their examinations in 2021.

The University of Nairobi is position 10 in Africa according to the just released July 2020 Webometrics Ranking.

The ranking web of universities places UoN at position 1 in the East African region and 956 in the world. In the four parameters considered in this ranking, the UoN is position 198 in the presence rank, 1075 in impact, 749 in the openness rank and 1602 in excellence. The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions.

In Africa, University of Cape Town is number one followed by University of the Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University at position 3. Makerere University is ranked at number 12 while Kenyatta University is 28.

Harvard University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology were ranked position one, two and three respectively in the world ranking.

The information posted on the Webometrics website indicates that the July edition is built with the indicators obtained during the month in order to maintain the freshness of the data of the most current and updated Ranking of Universities.

The ranking which started in 2004 is in its 17th year of publication. The aim is to offer full coverage of higher education institutions and is currently ranking over 30,000 institutions from more than 200 countries.

The primary objective of the ranking is to promote Open Access to the knowledge generated by the university. The best strategy to improve in the ranking is to increase quantity and quality of the web content.
