The UoN Skill Centre hosts the Google Digital Marketing Skills Training

The UoN Office of Career Services in partnership with eMobilis and Google hosted the Google Digital Marketing Skills Program training at the UoN main campus tower on 15 July 2019. The training aimed at imparting youth and job seekers with digital skills in preparation for the job market.

Google Digital Skills for Africa are designed to help improve employability and business growth. The training is offered in-person and online in English, French and Portuguese with highly tailored content for job seekers and Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs).

Students were taught on a few topics including an Introduction to the internet, Search Engine Optimization, safe surfing, opportunities in digital careers and how to be safe online.

Students were also enlightened on the digital space career opportunities which include Customer Acquisition & Retension, SEO Manager, SEM Manager, E-Commerce Manager Social Network Manager, Graphics & Media Developer, Online Content Writer and Data Analyst among many others

The eMobilis team also shared a few tips on what companies look for when hiring such as Knowledge (skills), Experience, Tools and Attitude (Adaptable, Attitude, Optimistic).

The UoN Office of Career Services is grateful to Google and eMobilis for this training and will plan more future training to equip students with digital marketing skills.


The Office of Career Services on Wednesday July 17, 2019 visited the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS) top management staff including the Principal Prof. Rose Nyikal, Dean for Veterinary Medicine and Prof. Ndichu Maingi among other Chairman and lecturers attended the briefing session.

The purpose of the session was to brief the CAVs top management about the mandate of the Office of Career Services and to explore on areas of joint effort to de-centralize the activities of the career office to the college level.

The proposal from the Career Office was for the College to offer the following information in order to plan for activities at the college level;

  1. CAVs Academic Calendar;
  2. Database of agricultural companies and partners;
  3. Proposals on alumni to engage to improve students’ life in campus.

The Career office also proposed the following student activities to be done in collaboration with the college.

  1. Career Fairs and Exhibitions at CAVS;
  2. Career talks and Mentorship programs;
  3. Skills Development; and
  4. Student Talent Shows;

The Career Office is looking forward to partner with CAVS to bring activities right to the college level for the betterment of the students. The purpose is to develop student skills and groom them for employability


The University of Nairobi hosted the inaugural Presidential Digital Program Job Fair on Tuesday July 16, 2019 at the University’s Great Court. Through the Presidential Digital Talent Programme (PDTP) launched on February 10, 2015, fresh and qualified ICT graduates have gotten an opportunity to get mentorship, career guidance and recruited by host of technology companies present here today.

With the World in dire need of technical skills in ICT, the PDTP program is for sure imparting technical skills to young ICT graduates to make them competitive for the job market. Skills development is now our University’s main focus in order to enhance the graduates’ market value as a degree alone is not enough to secure them a stable job.

The University is proud of the continued partnership with the Ministry of ICT and Huawei Technologies Ltd. So far, over 2,000 UoN students have been trained on online work through the Ajira Digital program. Through the partnership with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd, the University has trained over 100 Students on the Huawei Certified Internet Associate (HCIA) Routing and Switching course giving them technical skills ready for the job market in the ICT sector.

In order to expand the Digital Space for young people to exploit the Digital Economy, the University has partnered with Global Technology Companies such as Huawei, Microsoft, IBM, Google and recently African Development Bank (AfDB) in Partnership with Microsoft and Facebook to implement the Coding for Employment Program.

These programs have trained and will continue to offer our students and staff the necessary technical skills to enable them tap into the job market both locally and internationally.

The University was happy to host the Presidential DigiTalent Job Fair.  Through the Presidential Digital Talent Programme (PDTP), fresh and qualified ICT graduates will have an opportunity to get mentorship, career guidance and recruited by host of technology companies present here today.

We believe that our students and alumni of the Presidential Digital Talent Program, Huawei ICT Academy, AfDB Coding for Employment, Google Digital Skills for Africa Program, Microsoft Imagine Academy, Andela Learning Centre and Moringa School graduates benefited from the one-day job fair and were linked to internship and job opportunities in the ICT sector.




The Office of Career Services hosted Janet Rangi, a Kenyan immigrant living in the US helping Kenyans to chase their America dream on Friday 12th July, 2019 at UoN main Campus.

Janet has a new acquired passion for blogging and giving advice to Kenyans who wish to migrate to the US like her. She recently launched a book titled ‘The American Success Pathways” that offers great counsel on how to prepare and go through the visa application process, travel and settling down in America.

In her talk to the UoN Student Career Brand Ambassadors, she highlighted the need for the student leaders to be practical, consistent, hold high standards and be effective time managers.

Ms. Rangi also got an opportunity to talk to students who are in search of internship and job opportunities. She urged any student planning to go to the US in pursuit of opportunities to ensure they excel in their degrees and obtain the necessary certification and registration to relevant professional bodies before travelling to the US.

With her advice through YouTube videos, web articles and blogs, Ms. Rangi offers a different pathway to success for those wishing to migrate to the US. It is hoped that UoN students planning to travel to the US will benefit greatly from Ms. Rangi’s advice.

MbeleNaBiz Business Competition

With support from the World Bank ,  the Government of Kenya through the Kenya Youth Employment Opportunities Program has initiated a Business Plan Competition for youth to present their Winning Business Plan for funding.

Over 750 youth will be granted with a sum of cash not less than of Kshs 900,000 and not exceeding Kshs 3.6 million to start their businesses as well as be trained for business from Dec 2019 to Feb 2020.

The competition is scheduled to commence on 24th  of June 2019 and end on 2nd  of September 2019 and KPMG Advisory Services has been contracted to oversee the competition.

It will help help SMBs to grow their career or business at their own pace, with flexible and personalised training courses designed to build confidence and help entrepreneurs thrive.

This basic Digital Marketing Skills training will be carried out in partnership with Google and eMobilis at the University of Nairobi.
