University of Nairobi is offering 137 masters scholarships for the 2020/2021 academic year. The applications are open only to applicants for the September 2020 intake. General guidelines to applicants Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria among other specific criteria by their respective units.

1) Applicants should have completed and graduated with an undergraduate degree from the University of Nairobi in the academic year 2018/2019 (except for School of Medicine, School of Dental Sciences and School of Nursing Sciences which requires mandatory two (2) years practical experience before admission into master’s programme).

2) Possess a first class or second class upper division. The Scholarship is offered on merit (preference will be offered to the best students).

3) Must have been admitted for the September 2020 intake in the particular programme.

4) Duration and commencement: Scholarship is conditional and tenable for two (2) consecutive years (except for the School of Medicine and School of Dental Sciences which runs for four (4) years) and is not transferable within departments.

5) Scholarship must be taken at time of offer (no deferments and temporary withdrawal from studies while on scholarship).

6) Scholarships are for full time students only; the student has to take the maximum number of units per semester, and successful students must comply with the terms and conditions of the scholarship and complete their studies within the stipulated programme duration.

7) Equal opportunities: Female candidates and candidates from less privileged regions or groups as well as candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

8) Application Procedures and Deadline: Applications which should include an application letter addressed to the Dean/Director, letter of admission and certified copies of degree certificate , transcripts and a motivation letter must be sent to the respective Dean/Director.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama on Friday July 24, 2020 delivered an address to the University Community at 4.30pm.

Below are the highlights of his address as quoted;

• UoN community has also not been spared by COVID-19. We have recorded 14 confirmed cases involving 10 members of staff, and 4 of their dependents. Three active members of staff and one retired staff have lost their lives. These are not mere statistics;
• It is a difficult period for our Country & UoN community. I convey my condolences to the affected families & pray to the almighty God to give them comfort and strength to overcome the pain and loss. I also wish a quick recovery to all those who have tested positive;
• In view of the current trends of infections and the need to ensure staff and students safety, the University of Nairobi will continue to dispense its services using online platforms;
• The online teaching and learning, online admissions, online exams and virtual graduation will continue until such a time when we shall begin to see a decline in number of cases or when the experts will advice that it is safe to resume on campus learning;
• I urge parents, guardians and sponsors to support the students with smartphones, iPads, or computers to enable them participate in our online classes in the safety of their homes;
• The Academic division shall soon issue joining instructions and guidelines for conducting the online orientation for the class of 2020/2021-First Year;
• The continuing students will also commence the new academic year virtually in September. The Senate is going to deliberate and provide specific dates shortly;
• Let me also reassure all the students and staff that we are going to hold the 63rd graduation ceremony virtually on 25th September 2020. We plan to graduate all qualified graduands for PhDs, Masters, Bachelors, Diplomas and fellowships
• Our University has come of age. We are marking 50 years since the University became a fully-fledged University and to became first Public University in Kenya on 1st July 1970

The University of Nairobi on Thursday July 23, 2020 from 9.00am held a Virtual Inter-Denominational Annual Prayer Day for the year 2020. This is a day set aside for giving thanks to God and seeking for His continued blessings and protection to the University community.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama in his remarks appreciated all who participated in the prayer day. The VC further indicated that 2020 was a year of Jubilee for the University of Nairobi, a year for reflecting on the past 50 years God has seen the University through its Research and Teaching activities. He further stated that this was a time to forgive one another, focus on what you can do better together as the UoN family and be more united for the betterment of everyone.

UoN values its relationship with God and that is why each year the University fraternity communes together to give thanks to God and seek for His continued blessings and protection. In God we shall walk the path of our lives as a University towards excellence. On behalf of the Chaplaincy, Fr. Kaigua during the prayer day held on July 23, 2020 appreciated all participants who attended the prayer session both physically and virtually. Long live UoN in Unity and Work: Unitate et Labore.

During the 2020 Annual Prayer Day held on Thursday July 23, 2020, Mr. Mohamed Swaleh the the UoN Muslim Chaplain offered a word of encouragement to the Muslim Community.

Mr. Swaleh,  read from Chapter 94 of the Holy Quran. He emphasized that “..no hardships or difficulty lasts forever, after every hardship, ease will come. Let us devote ourselves to Allah”. The Muslim Chaplain further encouraged the University fraternity to PRAY continually and invoke God of His mercy, HOPE for better things to come and practice CAUTION during this Covid period.

Rev. Hosea Mitei who is the Protestants Chaplain in his Sermon for the day emphasized that Paul reminds us in the book of 1 Corinthians 12: 12 – 20 that we are one body and every part of the body MUST function properly. Therefore, as a University Community we must have UNITY because we are united together. We are also DIVERSE and DEPEND on each other to fulfil the University’s mandate. Rev. Mitei further urged the University community to look for opportunities to spur and encourage each other during this Covid period, serve each other’s needs and to support and encourage each other.

The University is one unit and all stakeholders must work together to achieve its mandate.

In concluding the one-hour prayer session, Fr. Peter Kaigua, the Catholic Chaplain at the University reiterated that the University of Nairobi values its relationship with God and that is why each year the University fraternity communes together to give thanks to God and seek for His continued blessings and protection.
