As a leading institution of learning and research, the university, through C4DLab (the Innovation and Incubation Hub) and a strategic industry partner, is running a 6 month-long prestigious Research & Innovation Fellowship.

The competitive fellowship will give 20 select fellows an opportunity to solve real-life local problems while applying the 21st century 4Cs skills and explore human-centered design / Design thinking methodologies. The fellows – together with other curious change makers and a community of research and innovation experts – will engage in rewarding research, problem solving and innovation projects in financial services.  

To be admitted, the fellow will be required to have satisfied the following requirements:

·         Final level undergraduate and Masters-level students (interested PhD students will also be considered)

·         Students from the following Schools/faculties/departments: Computer Science, Business, Development Studies, Sociology, Psychology,  Anthropology, Law, Actuarial Science, Economics, Engineering, and Agriculture

·         Curious about research and innovation and particularly application of Design Thinking to solving real-life local problems.

·         Submit evidence of challenges that one has attempted to solve, CV, practical work portfolio and a motivation why your application should be considered.

·         Available to commit close to a 6 month-long program allocating an average of 15 hours per week to the fellowship program.

·         Demonstrated passion and interest in problem-solving and innovation challenges.

The select fellows will undertake a deep immersion into four pillars that shall prepare them as researchers and innovators. The four pillars are:

·         21st century 4 C’s skills of Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity.

·         Principles and practices of Design Thinking, Innovation, and Problem Based Learning (fundamentals)

·         Multi-disciplinary practical problem-solving.

·         Practical research techniques – data collection, surveys, Focus Group Discussions, observation, and contextual interviews.

The University Chaplaincy has organized an Inter-Faith University Prayer Day to commit the University Community and all planned activities for the year 2021 into God’s hands. This is also a day set aside for giving thanks to God and seeking for His continued blessings and protection to the University community.

In adherence to the Covid-19 guidelines and protocols, we shall have a limited number of staff and students in Taifa Hall and the rest of the University Community is invited to follow the prayer day proceedings live on the University Website, Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The University of Nairobi Alumni Association (UONAA) this week presented a donation of handwashing machines as way of responding to the unprecedented challenges of the Pandemic and giving back to their alma matter. The equipment which comprised of over 6 handwashing stations were donated to the 6 University Colleges and were warmly received by the DVC Academic Affairs, Prof. Julius Ogeng’o together with the Dean of Students, Mr. Kinyua on behalf of the various College Principals.

The move was greatly commended by various members of the Executive Committee and Alumni Chapter Chairs who were also in attendance. They noted and appreciated the efforts made by the Association to combat the deadly virus as well as improve on the general sanitation to ensure maximum preparedness as the resumption to the various academic programs is underway.

In his remarks, the DVC (AA/SA) Prof. Julius Ogeng’o  praised and commended the Organizers for their tremendous contribution towards saving lives, which he termed it as service to humanity. He placed his heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the University.

The Dean of Students, Mr. Johnson Kinyua appreciated the importance of such equipment and how they are going to be of much assistance both to the students and staff members. He advised on the essence and need to use the handwashing tools responsibly and thanked the Association on behalf of the students.

The University of Nairobi Alumni Association is a long-term University’s strategic partner and has been making immense support to the University since its inception.  The Association did call on all Alumni from every sector of the Kenyan and global economy to consider extending their support to their Alma Mater through the Association.

Happy Holidays

As part of recognizing its partners, Huawei Technologies Company Ltd celebrated the ‘Huawei Outstanding Partner Awards 2020’ on September 22 2020 at the Huawei Partner’s Night during the virtual HUAWEI 2020 CONNECT EVENT held in Beijing, China. The event was held virtually for the first time due to Covid-19 concerns.

During the event, the University of Nairobi was recognized and awarded the ‘2020 Excellent Global Talent Ecosystem Partners Award out of 600 other Huawei ICT Academies. The University was represented by Prof. Stephen Kiama, the Vice Chancellor who gave his remarks about the University’s collaboration with Huawei and acknowledge the award through a 15 minutes video recording played at the event. The virtual event was attended by key global Huawei partners, management and customers.

On December 21, 2020, a team from Huawei led by Ms. Xu Jingwen, Training and Certification Manager and Michael Kamau from the Kenya Enterprise Business Department paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kiama, to officially hand over the trophy for the award. The Office of Career Services was represented by Mr. Johnson Kinyua, Director, Career Services and the ICT Centre, by Mr. Joram Kinuthia, Deputy Director, Network Infrastructure Services.

The University extends its appreciation to Huawei for the continued fruitful partnership with UoN through the Office of Career Services (OCS) and ICT Centre, which has borne many fruits for the betterment of both our students and staff.

The University of Nairobi received the 2020 Excellent Global Talent Ecosystem Partners Award due to an excellent collaboration with Huawei since 2018 in the following activities:

1. Huawei Management Trainee Program (Over 20 students from University of Nairobi were selected to join Huawei Graduate trainee program in 2019 and 2020);
2. Huawei ICT Academy participation – UoN recognised at Best Huawei ICT Academy in Kenya in 2018 and third best academy out of 30 Universities academies in the country in 2019;
3. Huawei DigiTalent Career Fair (Joint collaboration between Huawei, Ministry of ICT, ICT Authority and University of Nairobi to support the Presidential Digital Talent Program (PDTP) Career Fair & AJIRA Program);
4. Industrial Visit (University of Nairobi organized a successful tour by top students at the Huawei Technologies Co, Ltd Kenya exhibition hall on June 4, 2019);
5. Huawei ICT Competitions participation（1000+ participants from University of Nairobi);
6. Huawei ICT Competition and Talent Double Election Committee participation by UoN;
7. Huawei Management Board & Huawei Campus Ambassador Program launched at the University;
8. Successful hosting of Huawei Boot camps in 2019 & 2020 at UoN;
9. Successful Chancellor’s visitation to the Huawei Headquarters in Shenzhen in 2018; and
10. Donation of ICT Equipment worth USD 50,000 for the UoN Skills Centre.

Huawei Technologies Company Ltd will in 2021 partner with UoN in implementing the Academy Support Centre (ASC) aimed at supporting 42 other Huawei ICT Academies in Kenya.

The University of Nairobi looks forward to more active collaborations with Huawei Technologies Company Ltd. in future aimed at developing a pool of ICT talent in the country.

Edgar Odongo, a student from the School of Law, is the winner of the 7^th National African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) essay writing competition.

The third year student emerged best among 186 students across different universities and colleges in Kenya.

The annual competition organized by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is aimed at generating and sustaining awareness for standardization among the youth in Africa with this year’s contest organized under the theme – the role of standardization in resolving and addressing the socio-economic issues for the Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons and creating durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.

According to his lecturers, Odongo’s win was not surprising at all as he is a bright and gifted student, who has topped his class since joining the School of Law at Kisumu Campus in 2018. In addition, he has been a regular and promising participant in moot court competitions within the university.

Edgar will now represent Kenya at the Eastern African Regional competition, thereafter, the continent and the world lies ahead for him to conquer.

The Kisumu Campus and the wider UoN community wishes him the best in his conquests.

6 students from Kenya qualify for the Global final round of Huawei ICT Competition

The Huawei ICT Competition is at the Global Final Round and 6 students from Kenya have qualified to compete. One of the qualifying students is from the University of Nairobi, Maluki Muthusi Maluki from School of Computing & Informatics.

The 6 qualifying students will undergo a vigorous 2-day training boot camp at the University of Nairobi.

The University of Nairobi and the University of Kent in the UK launched the Erasmus+ project on Tuesday December 8, 2020. This is a collaboration between the two Universities that will promote students and staff mobility between the two institutions.

The launch was attended by the Vice Chancellors of both universities; University of Kent, Prof. Karen Cox and UoN, Prof. Stephen Kiama. The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Raychelle Omamo who is also an alumnus of the University of Kent was a guest speaker. In attendance were Johnson Kinyua, Director Career Services, UoN, James Corbin, Head of Careers and Employability, University of Kent, Primrose Paskins, Snr International Partnerships Officer, University of Kent, George Kimani Chairman, KNCCI and Jesse Muraya from KNCCI among other guests from the two Universities.

In her speech, Amb. Raychelle Omamo congratulated the two institutions for joining forces to implement the Erasmus+ project that will support staff and students in mobility between the two Universities in Africa and Asia focusing on the exchange of best practice in the area of careers and employability services.

In his speech, the UoN VC, Prof.  Stephen Kiama welcomed this collaboration and noted that it would help promote sustainable development by reduce unemployment especially among the graduates and promote learning of new skills required by the job market.

Patricia Crew an Alumni from the University of Kent in her remarks stated that to place students in careers, they must be educated and skilled. She applauded the University of Kent for its famous and renowned graduates.

Johnson Kinyua, the Director Career Services, UoN shared the experiences from the University of Nairobi’s Office of Career Services. The Career Office focuses on retooling and repackaging graduates who are market and future-ready graduates. The Erasmus+ project will expose the UoN graduates to best practices. This will be achieved by setting up a Career Assessment Centre, Graduate Tracker System and engaging the industry and students to enable the industry to absorb the graduates.

Geoffrey Kimani, the Chairman, the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) indicated that KNCCI is keen to receive high-quality graduates that have gone through the Erasmus+ program and offer internship and job opportunities through their Youth Service Program aimed at engaging students to prepare for the work sector and entrepreneurship.

In concluding the program launch, James Corbin, the Head of Careers and Employability Services indicated that the University of Kent was looking forward to partnering with the University of Nairobi in developing the skills of students together and offering trainings in relevant skills.
